“TV commercials during Super Bowl XLV in 2011 are estimated to have cost three million dollars for a thirty second slot (74937).” If you watch any form of television or online streaming media it’s hard to avoid commercials. They have grown to be such an integral part of television they are harder to notice when watching TV. The Super Bowl comes around once every year, but people tune in just as much for the commercials as the actual game. Why would they tune in for commercials they see every day on a daily basis, while watching their favorite television show? Commercials are used to inform, sell, or persuade. Companies hire specialists to maximize the sales that a commercial produces by appealing to the customer. They can be either funny, relatable, sympathetic, or informative. Color schemes are used to attract attention to specific details and products are enhanced through photo shopping. Recently, I became curious about the subject of commercials after watching too much TV becoming bored with it. Now, sometimes I turn on the television I look to understand the purpose behind advertisements and commercials. Every channel seems to require commercials for their shows. News anchors and professional athletes perform their jobs around the scheduling of these commercials. Commercials pay for the TV shows to run on air and in return they get thirty seconds to captivate the audience with their product or message. For most commercials, it is a business they make a product and they need to get the maximum profit from that product. Commercials are the main way to gain customer support through purchases. The main way to reach out to a large audience is through commercials. I began to wonder the science behind commercials and started askin… … middle of paper … …ently. In our ever-changing world, advertisements seem to have a dominate position in the media world. Whether we like it or not advertising is here to stay, because we need to be informed, sold products and made laugh from time to time. Through my research, I learned that advertisements have a lot of negatives such as priming and misleading information that could cause huge problems in the near future. However, advertisements still have their positives that almost fully counter back against the negatives. I am neutral when it comes to siding with advertisements. I wanted to know more information about the science behind what makes an advertisement good, bad, funny, or informative. After reviewing the research, I think there need to be modifications for certain types of advertisements that lie and falsify information to gain profit, but it may be more of my opinion.
