The sum of the oxidation numbers of Polyatomic ions is not equal to zero.
Some polyatomic ions, their formulas, names, as well as the oxidation numbers of
their central atoms are given below. Show how you will solve for the oxidation
number of the ions following the example given. Remember that oxygen is -2 except
in peroxides where it is -1.
