To be an American in the 1940s consisted of confusion, sacrifices, and triumph. Each time period in history contained events that contributed to the America we live in today. From everyday style, and battles in the Pacific, our country was shaped by the many events from our past. America was one of the countries that was greatly affected by the Great Depression . When the economy crashed, we were pretty much hopeless in the sense that our money meant nothing. A large sum of money could barely buy a family a loaf of bread. Over thirteen million Americans were unemployed by 1933. People were desperate to find money to afford food to survive, resulting in high rates of crime. People also began to use other methods to escape the results of the depression, resorting to alchohalism, and even suicide. Luckily, nothing lasts forever, and the 1940s slowly evolved into an escape from the Great Depression. There were programs designed to take initiative by Roosevelt, and America get back to the top. The Works Project Administration (WPA) was a program that employed 8.5 million Americans. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) created dams, and hydroelectric projects that controlled flooding, and provided Americans were attacked by surprise at a U.S. Naval Base on Oahu Island, Hawaii by Japanese forces. The bombing killed over 2,300 Americans, destroying the U.S.S. Arizona, and overturned the U.S.S. Oklahoma. Officials in Washington were embarressed to announce the details of the fatalities and destruction of the attack, as so not to let America lose hope. PResisdent Roosevelt declared war on Japan the following day, but priorities were soon changed when Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. a few days later. This attack influenced Americans to regain their dominant spot in the world. American citizens were willing to do whatever they could to regain this world
