The term leadership has been evolved and expanded over several decades. Researchers, theorists and writers have documented definitions and schools of thought on the leadership. The controversial issue has lead to pervasive concepts of leadership effectiveness and ineffectiveness which has bolstered the views on which leader unequivocally meets the requirements. Walker (2011) elucidated that leadership approaches though different in dimensions and characteristics play a pivotal role in conceptualizing how to improve on ones leadership practices and further, how followers understand and interpret their leaders’ style. Walker also opined that over myriad of decades, leadership approaches more or less chronologically progressed from trait approaches to behavioural approaches, contingency and inspirational approaches then followed. Trait theorists declared that leaders are born not made and their innate personalities afforded their ability to lead. Bernard-Johnson proffered that in the late 1940s there was a shift from trait theory to behavioural theory. Essentially, behavioural theorists “sought to identify the behaviours associated with effective leadership” (Walker 2011). The undergirded thinking was that the attitudes and behaviours of effective and ineffective leaders could be replicable in all situations. Premised on this assumption, three studies were conducted. This discourse will seek to expound on the major studies namely Iowa, Ohio and Michigan and the reverberating effects they will have on my leadership practice.
