The songs of Homer and later ancient poets, like Virgil, focus on the difficult choices that humans make and the consequences of those choices. Over the course of the semester, we have learned about many different character that are placed in very precarious positions forced to make difficult choices. Often times their is an internal contest between what these heroes want to do and what they are destined to do. The purpose of Homer’s early works, the Iliad and Odyssey, is to show the importance of theological destiny and how one can attempt to run away from their destiny or delay it, but in the end the will of the Gods will occur. A major focus in Virgil’s Aeneid, is to create a foundation legend of Rome and act as a propaganda piece for the rule of Augustus. It not only depicts the Roman destiny of greatness and eventually conquerors of the known He was either going to have a long and peaceful life but had no glory and fame or he was going to be one of the greatest heroes in Greek history but live a short life. Thetis attempted to hide away Achilles as a girl in order to keep him out of the Trojan war when Helen was taken/fled with Paris. Achilles was eventually discovered and needed by the Greeks to win the war. During the war, Achilles fought with Agamemnon over a war prize, and refused to fight until the king returned her to him. In this instance Achilles, chooses to put his own pride over his destiny as a warrior. It took the death of his companion Patroclus to unleash the fury of Achilles, who in his rage killed the great Trojan warrior Hector. After killing Hector, Achilles gained his fame as near invincible, but died due to an arrow shot at his heel, the one place was vulnerable.
