Seventy-five hundred thousand people were arrested in 2012 for marijuana possession alone (“Reforming…”). This offense is considered very serious, yet it is gradually becoming the most used drug in America. Marijuana should be legalized due to its medicinal value, cropping abilities, and recreational values. Marijuana is a schedule one controlled substance along with heroin, LSD, ecstasy, and meth. Which means it has a high potential of being abused (Drug). It also means marijuana has no medicinal value which can be argued with considering several states including Colorado and the District of Colombia has legalized marijuana for its medicinal values. The schedule one law also states that its drugs have potentially severe psychological or physical dependence (Drug). However, only about nine percent of marijuana users become psychologically dependent and it is unknown of a person becoming physically dependent (“Charlottes”…). Since 1946 over fifty percent of the population has supported marijuana legalization whether it is just medicinal or recreational as well. Marijuana users are less likely to be obese and have lower body mass index measurements (“Charlottes”…). There have been no effects to the immune responses, chromosomes, or cell metabolites in any chronic marijuana smokers (McGrath). There is also a reduced risk of becoming diabetic (“Charlottes”…).A three year old in Colorado was prescribed low THC dose marijuana to bring her epileptic seizers down from having multiple a day to maybe one a week (“Charlottes”…). There has yet to have been any documentation that marijuana causes emphysema or lung cancer (Hollister). It has also been unheard of to develop any kind of brain damage from chronic smokers.
