Pythagoras was born in 569 BC on the island of Samos, Greece. s parents were Mnesarchus and Pythais. Pythagoras was not an only child, and had anywhere from two to three brothers. As for Pythagoras’s personal life, historians argue over whether or not he had a wife and kids. Some historians say he married a woman named Theano and had two children with her. Others believe that Theano was simply one of Pythagoras’s students, and that they never married nor had any kids together. The exact date and cause of Pythagoras’s death is also unknown. Reports vary from being killed by an angry mob to starving himself to death. Pythagoras was always a very smart, well educated person, but two men were a large part of why Pythagoras was so interested In this group, it was believed that “all things are numbers, mathematics is the basis for everything, and that geometry was the highest form of mathematics”. During his time with this group, Pythagoras was given credit for many mathematical discoveries and theories. Although Pythagoras was given the credit for many of the group’s discoveries, the society was especially strict and had a high level of secrecy, which means that it is uncertain whether these discoveries were originally Pythagoras’s ideas, or if they came from the group as a whole. It doesn’t that Pythagoras never really wrote anything down during his time, which could have proved who first came up with these Pythagoras’s study of triangles did not end there, and eventually led to his most famous theorem- the Pythagorean Theorem. This well known theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. In other words, in a triangle with legs A and B and hypotenuse C, A2+B2=C2. It is believed that the Babylonians understood this concept before Pythagoras (1000 years earlier), but Pythagoras proved this theory. Numbers that satisfy the formula A2+B2=C2, such as the integers three, four, and five are known as Pythagorean Triples. Today, the Pythagorean theorem has many uses is real life situations, and many formulas and theories have been made based on this theorem. For example, one formula that has came about because of the Pythagorean theorem is the distance formula. The distance formula finds the distance between two points by using a variant of the Pythagorean Theorem. Finding this distance is done by creating a right triangle, where the hypotenuse is the line connecting the points. Then, you simply rearrange the Pythagorean Theorem formula to solve for c. This essentially gives you the distance
