In order to address one’s moral conscience and the good of the state, a common ground must be found to obtain a balanced society. Martin Luther King Jr argued through the civil rights movement that every person should have the right to speak freely and share the same human rights. Antigone questioned why the laws set by man should have power over one’s moral rights. They followed their moral beliefs and overcame the ties between the political views of their time. An individual’s obligation to do the right thing prevails over the political restrictions on moral rights. Following his moral belief and questioning the treatment and social standing of the black community, Martin Luther King Jr led large and powerful movements that influenced and persuaded the black community into standing up for their beliefs and morals. Quoted from Martin Luther King Jr’s speech, he stated “One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” Martin Luther King Jr brought up the topic of civil disobedience which plays a major role in having an obligation to follow moral belief. But sometimes people disobey in an uncivil way, which is destructive and will not their cause. Disobeying the laws and putting her life at risk even though aware of the severe consequences, Antigone did not worry for she knew she had to follow God’s laws. Although this came from good intention, some religions involve prejudiced beliefs. For example, Christians often oppose gay marriage due to the fact that their religion does not approve.
