Exploring Communication in the Workplace The way a person communicates at work can differ from their everyday home life. The workplace provides a sense of structure through learning, language, and life (178). There is special practices and codes an employee must conform to in order to perform the work as well as working with others to get the job done. How a person communicates in the work environment is key to how they perform at work (179). The workplace conforms a persons identity into the performing particular tasks and the everyday patterns of life are altered by the work environment (179). In a workforce setting a persons communication identity becomes adapted to the environment, relies on language performance, and uses essential instrumental goals. In the workplace the everyday leisurely home activities is conformed into formal ways of communication. While at home a person may slouch on the couch, talk and chew food at the same time, and Dressing in work attire and acting respectful in the workplace accomplishes good communication with employers. Learning specific terminology needed for an occupation is important to speak with co-workers, employers, and perform the tasks that is expected. Instrumental goals are key to the flow of the work organization in order to complete the work assignments. I believe without these elements of communication identity conformity I would not of obtained a healthy work relationship with my co-workers and employers. It is ok to act professional and proper at work because it is expected. Everyone communicates informally outside of work with friends and family, but in a workplace there is a sense of sophistication that must be presented by employees.
