Rome was a melting pot of different religions. Many of the
religions were polytheistic at this time. When Rome conquered new
regions, they did not force that region into any particular region
and generally allowed people to practice whatever they believed.
That is, at least until Diocletian came into power. He believed
that Rome’s instability was due to the general population’s
distancing of worshipping the Roman gods. He went as far as to go
after sects of religion he believed threatened the stability of
Rome, including Christianity. Christian worship was banned and
several thousand Christians refused to denounce their beliefs and
were executed. (Brooks, 2019, pg. 189) Constantine, the emperor
following Diocletian, was the empire’s first Christian emperor. His
sponsorship of Christianity led to its expanse across the
emperor.
