Cannabis is a controversial topic that has plagued America for years whether it is good or bad, legal or nonlegal. Many of America’s biggest problems and some of it’s greatest achievements has been from this mysterious plant. A little bit of background on Cannabis is that is more commonly known as Marijuana or Weed and is used recreationally as a psychoactive drug or in the medical field as a pain relieving drug, and sometimes used for religion. It causes many side effects such as heightened mood, relaxation, increase in hunger, loss of short-term memory, cottonmouth, and paranoia. In the early 1800’s, when America was just beginning, the production of hemp was encouraged because it ed create things like rope, sails, and clothing. In Moving to the 1960’s, as the political and cultural views started to change, so did the view on marijuana. The white upper class had become more fond of the drug and reports by President Kennedy found that the drug did not lead to a life of violence or heavier drug usage. Following these claims, the medical field became more open to the idea of treatment using the plant. During the 1970’s, most drug related offences were brushed off because of the unruly punishment ‘s put in place in the 60’s. Marijuana was put into a different category than other drugs and got rid of jail sentences for possessing small amounts. Over the course of the 1970’s, eleven states decriminalized the usage of marijuana and other states reduced the Approval of marijuana by 27 states, new uses in the medical field, and its penalties on those convicted from the use of the most common drug in the world, is forcing America to rethink its stance on the matter. So, one of the biggest questions in the United States right now is, should America continue to deny its citizens the medical and health effects, and the money revenue from marijuana. Once again, marijuana is one of the most illegally used drugs in the world, and still people use it regularly every single day. Because it’s used every day, the legality of it is being rethought for both recreational and medical uses. On a medical standpoint, marijuana could be very useful as it acts a a pain and stress reliever, it slows cancer cells from spreading in the body, s prevent alzheimer ‘s, controls epileptic seizures, is beneficial to your lungs, s recover from chemotherapy, and controls muscle spasms. So why isn’t it being used more openly if it s with so many things? Recreationally is a different perspective though, where people who may be affected in a negative way or people who use it in an unsafe manner. Although, it should also be legal because it is an active stress reliever and s people relax, sleep, and control your appetite if you’re not able to eat.
